Exploring Determinants of Life Satisfaction among Baby Boomers by Using Multi-Level Analysis

|
The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze life satisfaction determinants of the Korea`s baby boomer. Furthermore, discovering policy alternatives that would enhance the life satisfaction is part of the agenda. Two life satisfaction determinants were categorized：Individual and Community Level. These two layers were analyzed through employing multi-level model and exploring interactive effects between KLoSA (Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing) and KOSIS (Korean Statistical Information Service) data. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, at the individual level, being women, higher class consciousness associated with socioeconomic status, positive self-rated health status, and high expectations toward government policies` coverage of senior social security contributed to increased level of life satisfaction among the baby boomers. Second, frequent contacts with friends, continuous participation in cultural activities, engaging in paid works, participating in volunteer activity were also able to improve their level of life satisfaction. Third, at the local community level, as more fitness training facilities and better medical infrastructure were installed, it yielded higher life satisfaction of the baby boomers. Furthermore, from the point of interactive effects between individual and the local community, positive self-rated health status and better local medical infrastructure led to higher life satisfaction among baby boomers. Based on these findings, our study discussed plausible policy alternatives to increase the level of life satisfaction among baby boomers.
